“Indeed, no-one can thwart the purposes of your mind – for they can’t be touched by fire, steel, tyranny, slander or anything.”
Marcus Aurelius, Meditations.
When you find yourself in a situation that conflicts with or contradicts your values and expectations, you can experience negative emotions. Although frustrating, that doesn’t mean that your values and expectations are necessarily wrong, and that the situation is right, and that you should change your views as a result.
Retrace your steps, mental as well physical, to the reason that brought you to this point in the first place. Put another way, take a step back (or ‘back up a bit’) and make space to question the situation: what has happened? Why was that? What have I learned? What shall I do about it now?
