Time to think…about avoiding luxury

“As for me, I would choose being sick over living in luxury, for being sick only harms the body, whereas luxury destroys both the body and the soul, causing weakness and incapacity in the body, and lack of control and cowardice in the soul. What’s more, luxury breeds injustice because it also breeds greediness.” Musonius Rufus, Lectures

Every minute yearning for something you haven’t got is a minute lost in the here-and-now. When you ‘wake’ from your daydream, you’re still where you are. Every minute spent revelling in your luxury, wealth and power is a minute becoming more dependent and subjective in your thinking. What would you do if you lost it all? Could you bear that pain?

Learn to become grateful for what you have, whether that is something you own or have been given or have simply experienced. Keep a gratitude diary and make 3 entries at the end of every day before you go to sleep. It’s a matter of perspective. What differentiates the good times from the bad times is your own attitude. What do you make this moment mean?
